Rocket Knights: Next Gen (Prologue)

It has been seven years since the King Gedol's attack on Zephyrus. The Kingdom has since been under renovations, and crime has begun to raise. To help with the repairs, and restore faith in the people, a new batch of Rocket Knights have been recruited.

Currently, Older and more experienced Knights have been on duty, scouting the surrounding territories of the kingdom to be sure no threats are plotting against the kingdom. While the younger and less experienced Knights are helping to rebuild the Kingdom, and gaining the people's trust. As well as protecting others from any dangers that might be lurking in the Kingdom itself.

Only Recently, did one of Sparkster's commanding officers Lieutenant Kaji Firestone, presented him with information about bandits that have been pillaging surrounding villages. Sparkster, realizing many of his other knights are on bigger missions themselves, decides to enlist the help of the younger knights. It is about time they took on bigger challenges. This was the time to test their strength and resolve.

Kohaku, also known as Gadget by her friends, is one such knight who has been chosen for this mission. Even though she is the most recent member of the team, her bombs would be useful in tight situations. Kohaku was working on a few new Bombs for her arsenal in Armor's workshop before receiving a notice to report to the meeting hall at the Barracks. Wondering what it's about, she heads there, and waits for the others to arrive.

"... I wonder what this is all about..?" Kohaku wonders. "hmm...?" She looks to see others beginning to show up. "Oh hey guys!" She greets her friends. "How's it going?"

It was a beautiful day at the kingdom of Zephyrus. Seven years have passed since it was attacked by King Gedol. He was ultimatley defeated by Sparkster and the Rocket Knights, Elhorn's flying defenders. However the kingdom is in dire need of repairs. While the kingdom begins to repair itself, recruits Summer and Silver arrive at the Barracks meeting hall. There they find Kohaku already there. After she greeted them and asked them how things were going the duo responded.

"Hey Kohaku. It's been a while." Summer said smiling.

Summer, a recent recruit, is a survival expert and talented marksman. Her skills in surviving in the wild could come in handy whenever the knights become stranded. She is able to shoot a target with her crossbow at long distances and uses several different types: Freeze, Incendary, and even Explosive.

"Hey Gadget. Things are going fine for us." Silver said.

Silver, a skilled scout and recent addition to the team. With his speed and baseball bat like attack power, he can deal damage to multiple targets with little time. He can easily dodge enemy attacks and counter them with fast combos with his hook-swords.

"So have you seen Billy?" Summer asked.

"Come on, Eren!" A young female voice shouted. She was running down the hallway, panting, and in a hurry. The meeting might begin anytime soon and she wasn't present! That wouldn't look good for her reputation as one of the upcoming trustworthy Rocket Knights. It wasn't even her fault that she would appear late to the meeting: A certain someone took his time getting out of the bed and dressing up.

A male opossum was following her; seemingly annoyed by his female companion. In his eyes she was acting like it was his fault all alone! If it was so important for her being the first one standing next to the meeting room she could have left without him; he couldn't care less if he was first or last to arrive!

They didn't care if some maids and butlers were running around the hallway to serve the loyal family of Zephyrus. All they care for was to catch up the lost time.

Both of them stopped once they saw their comrades Gadget, Silver and Summer already gathered next to the meeting room. Consuela and Bronco weren't there, though. Oh well, they may come soon enough!

"Good morning!" The female opossum said while she was waving her hand in their direction "Sorry to keep you all waiting, but my brother was taking his time getting awake. Are fath- err... I mean Sir Sparkster and Sir Kaji still preparing everything for the upcoming conversation?"

Eren, her younger brother, just shrug with both of his shoulders "They wouldn't stay here if the meeting is already on the go."

"I wasn't asking you, I was asking the others. Thank you." Mia said in annoyance, but it wasn't her brother’s interest.

Mia and Eren were Rocket Knight Rookies just like the others, but they lived inside of the castle together with their parents Sparkster and Namid Sanjulo. It doesn't mean much to them though; their status never was important to them since they were still a normal family. Many people think it’s hard being the successor of the leader of Rocket Knights, but for them it was normal, and their father wasn't different in comparison with any other father.

The female opossum wore silver and light purple mixture armor. Her gauntlets and boots were of silver color and long enough to cover her elbows and knees; the torso armor looked like some sort of corsage, chained together with the lower part of her leg protection. The weapon she had equipped was a long lance of dark blue color and sharp steel at the upper end of it.

The male opossum on the other hand wore a more save armor, covering not only his chest but also his knees, shoulders and arms in a proper manner. It seemed to be some sort of tradition that the armor always was supposed to be of blue color, but there were gold accents set to it, making it less boring looking. His weapon was a sword of light weight, helping him to accomplish his Iaido-Style in no-time, but he had a big sword similar to his father which he rarely uses.

"I wonder what father is taking so long." Eren mumbled "Oh well, enough time for Consuela and Bronco to move their butts to the meeting room."

Two young armadillos were walking to the baracks. "It's all thanks to you, that we're going to be late," complained the male armadillo and grunted. He wore a broncecolored armor with red trims. Both shoulderpats were covered with spikes and he carried to heavy brass knuckles. His helmed covered most part of his face. Thanks to his boots and parts which covered his arms and legs, he looked like a ferocious fighter. He hit his knuckles against each other and and began bragging "Finally I can have some real fights. Our first mission, I can't wait for it. I hope we are going up against an army. Who could it be? The pigs from the empire? Or these slimey lizards from Gedol?" The exictment grew larger and larger for the armadillo boy. "I just wished we wouldn't come late, because of you Consuela!"

The annoyed armadillo girl sighed and flipped the nose of her brother. "Oh you have to talk Bronco!" she answered irritated and began to scold her younger brother "I was under the shower and I didn't even knew that Sparks called us. You should had said something." She shook her had in displeasure. She was also wearing an armor, which was turquoise with gold. It was a light armor without shoulder pats for more movement. She also had a winged helmet with a visor. She wielded tonfas as her weapons. Consuela and Bronco Maguerrero were trained by their father Armor. Like him, they were the tanks of the knights. Being able to attack anyone head-on. Both of them possessed an immense strength, although Consuela wasn't as strong as her brother but at least quicker. They walked torwards the barracks and Bronco asked "Do you think, pops will also come along?" "I don't think so, the other knights are away for other missions. Looks like he has a lot to do." She answered him and he replied, much to her surprise "Oh that's good." Actually Consuela though he missed their father, but it didn't seemed like it. "I mean otherwise he would steal the show and take down everyone by himself. Why would he need us?" he replied with a grin and Consuela couldn't help herself, but also grin. She wrapped an around him and gave him a noogie "Yes right and we don't want tiny Bronco to be bored, do we?".

The two of them arrived and Consuela waved at Mia "MIA! HEY! HOW ARE YOU?" The two of them joined the other young knights. They greeted everyone "Gadget, Summer, Silver you're also here," said Consuela cheerfuly, Bronco looked around and asked Eren "Say Eren, do you know what's going on? Why is everyone here? Is that mission that important." "Important enough to gather all of you!" answered a male voice. It was Sparks, who also arrived. He greeted them "Good to see you all!" silently he counted to make sure everyone was here. Loudly he explained why he asked everyone to gather here "As you know, our country is still in a state of rebuilding. Sadly some people do more harm than helping. Kaji send me a message about bandits, which are plundering different villages. He located them in the northeast. Since everyone else is away, it looks like you have to deal with it..." "WUHU!" cheered Bronco loudly and Sparkster glared at him. The male opossum cleared his throat and said "Like I said, you have to deal with him. You and you alone. I can't come along since I have to stay here. So it means your guys are on your own. You have been trained for this and now it's time to test your skills and your teamwork. Listen it's important that you stick together, you have to make up for the lack of experience with initiative, new ideas and teamwork. Also I want to remind you, even if they are bandits don't use more force than necessary..." Sparkster gave Bronco a grim look, wanted to make sure the armadillo understood and continued "...but also don't hestitate to fight at all," and then he gave Gadget the same look, since he knew she was prone to hestitate in such situations. "If you don't have any questions, I wish you all good luck and please watch each others back," as a father he couldn't help himself, but giving his two children a short look into the eyes. He felt a little bit uneasy leaving them alone for their first mission. At least they had some back up.

Gadget looked to the others and greeted them as they came into the meeting hall. First came Summer and Silver.

"Hey you guys!" Gadget smiled. "I've been doing okay. just training like the rest of you I'm sure..." When asked about Billy, she shook her head. "last I heard Billy was still out on his mission. Haven't you guys heard from him at all?" She asked.

Soon Mia and Eren came into the room and greeted everyone. "Hey you guys!" Gadget smiled once more at them and waved and chuckled at Mia's dialog about her father. "You know you can just call him dad right? It's not like we don't know the Captain and Lady Namid are your parents." She chuckled again. "Anyway I'm not really sure what we were called for exactly... I was just told to come over here, and that it was really important."

Not long after, Bronco and Consuela entered the room, who greeted everyone else in the room, but it seemed like Consuela was especially happy to see Mia was present, which made perfect sense, they were like sisters. Bronco asked Eren for any information about the meeting, but it wasn't long before he got his answer from Sparkster himself.

Gadget Stood up and gave a proper salute to the Captain of the Rocket Knights. "Good afternoon Sir Sparkster!" She said with a smile before taking a seat.

Everyone took a seat and waits for Sparkster to finish his briefing on the situation at hand. Bandits have been terrorizing other smaller villages.. taking advantage of the Kingdom's current weakened state, and Gadget and her friends were now assigned to take on the task of dealing with them. Bronco seemed the most excited about it so far. Gadget on the other hand felt far from ready for such a task... But at least she'd have her friends to back her up, rather that having to go it out alone. Sparkster gave both Bronco and Gadget a stern look, saying that they needed to work as a team, and to have both restraint, and initiative.

"Y-yes sir." Gadget said. "I won't fail my friends or the Kingdom."

After hearing Kohaku's answer about Billy Summer thought to herself. "Hmm... He didn't tell us he was leaving today." she thought. Summer and Silver then looked to see Eren and Mia coming along as well.Silver kept his arms crossed. He wasn't very social especially as a knight. He also wasn't very fond of Eren and his attitude. He then heard to armadillos coming. After they greeted them, Silver responded.

"Hi Eren and Mia!" Summer said waving.

"Of course we're here." Silver said. "But I want to know why we are here exactly..."

Then Consuela and Bronco arrived. The armadillos soon greeted everyone including Summer and Silver. Summer waved back in response. Then they heard a familiar voice and turned to see who it was, it was Sparkster, leader of the Rocket Knights. As he went on about the details of their mission, Bronco then shouted a cheer, this agitated Silver. After a breif silence Sparkster continued, stating that he can't come along and that they were on their own. After Sparkster finished he asked if there was any questions. Summer didn't have but Silver had one.

"You're having us work as a team? Does this mean we have to hold each other's hands?" Silver joked.

"Silver!" Summer shouted but it he didn't listen. "Anyways, do you know where Billy is Captain?" she asked.

Mia couldn't help herself but smile; trying to cover her embarrassment around Gadget, Summer and Silver.

"I know, but it sounds disrespectful calling your Captain "father" or "dad" out of the blue." the female opossum said while scratching one of her ears, but it didn't last long when her younger brother was wrapping his arm around her shoulders "Who cares? It's not like nobody knows that we're his children."

The peace underneath the five young Knights didn't last long when the last two of their group finally arrived.

"Connie! Bronco! You two came just in time!" Mia greeted the two armadillos and smiled at them. Now that the group was complete the only thing that was left was to wait until their Captain arrives so they knew what the hell was going on.

Just like the rest of the young Knights they didn't know what the reason for the meeting was, so Eren just shrug with his shoulders when he was letting go of his sister. Naturally he wanted to answer Bronco's question, but it was interrupted when his father's voice rang inside everybody's ears.

All of them took a seat and listen carefully to what Sparkster had to say. It was quite a surprise hearing that they got a chance to show what they were trained for... a bit sooner than expected but good enough to help Zephyrus! At least Eren was very confident that they don't need one of the veteran Knights to hold their hands getting through the mission. Thieves? They were nothing they couldn't handle.

Everyone was aware of their mission, but Silver couldn't resist but to joke around; making both Sanjulo siblings sigh in disbelief.

"Are you deaf? Dad already said that the other Knights are on their own missions, Billy included." Eren said it in a rather snarky tone in his voice which was soon followed by a 'ow!' when Mia gave him a smack on the back of his head "Are you Dad? Was she asking you? No! So shut your mouth and let dad answer Summer's question!"

Sparkster sighed loudly after Silver made his joke. Well these knights were still young and didn't have any experience. Hopefully they would all mature, even if it takes a little bit longer. Frowning all the time won't help and their training was also very strict and difficult. If they hadn't managed to pull it off, then they wouldn't be here standing before him. Now they had to show, if and how they will be able to use their gained knowledge and skills in a real mission. It would be a sink or swim moment and he dearly hopes they would swim. Silver made a snarky remark and Sparks was thinking about answering it properly, but Summer was quicker. It didn't end here, Summer was asking about Billy and Eren gave an answer, but luckily Mia was there and tried to calm him down in her own way. Yes they will watch each others backs, Sparkster saw it again. Sparks didn't know if he should scold his son or smile about his little know it all. He clapped his hands very loudly and told them "Stop that right here. You can goof off later. First your mission." Sparks turned his head torwards Summer and Silver and reminded them "It doesn't matter where Billy is or what his mission is. You guys have your own mission now. Concentrate on it now! That is something everyone has to remember. Now go and show what you guys are made off."

Bronco was visibly excited, finally they had their first mission. It even involved to clobber someone. "Oh can we go now? Please? I...I mean these bandit's won't wait!" Although she knew why he wanted to go, Consuela had to agree with her brother "You're right we should go now." Bronco turned on his rocket pack and was ready to fly off. "I hope you won't start your rocket pack inside of the building." "No I just warm it up, so it won't be so slow." Consuela giggled and turned his rocket pack off. She explained to her brother "No you don't and I bet you don't even know where we have to go." "To the northeast!" Consuela raised an eyebrow, after her brother answered her with that much confidence. She crossed her arms and asked him "Where is northeast?" Bronco stood up and looked around in confusion, turning around many times. After a while he looked at Consuela and shrugged his shoulders. "Thought so!" said Consuela with a big smile. It was good to know that something was holding Bronco back. "Well my little brother is right. We should go now," she stretched and said "Standing around the whole time is boring. Who wants to take the lead?" She looked around like she was waiting for an answer. "Well?"

Gadget could only sigh at all of the boys in the room.. Besides Sparkster, who was equally if not more annoyed. Sure it made sense that they'd all be excited to go on their first real mission without escort from a more experienced Knight, but their behavior made it seem like they weren't taking it seriously at all. Everyone was, at some level, excited about it though; Gadget couldn't deny that... But she WAS very nervous.

Bronco was totally pumped, and was rearing to go. He even started up his Rocket so he could take off as soon as he went outside. It was a good thing Consuela called him out on his lacking sense of direction, or Bronco probably would've gone the wrong way. But then The female Armadillo started to ask who wanted to play the role of "Team Leader". Gadget, giving in to pressure, backs away.

"N-not me.." She studdered. "If anything, I'm the LEAST qualified for such a thing... I'd say... maybe one of you girls." Gadget said looking to all the girls.

"Anyways.. I'll meet you all outside." Gadget said before leaving the meeting hall to wait for the other outside of the building.

While waiting for the others, Gadget wondered if she was really ready for her first mission. The Confidence she had in herself had yet to be realized, and she was worried about messing it all up and failing her friends.. and worst of all disappointing her superiors. They had put a lot of trust and faith in the little Tabby. Gadget didn't want to let them down.

Summer was not impressed by Eren's behaviour. After she heard from Sparkster that it didn't matter where Billy was at the moment she was disappointed. She obviously cared for Billy andd just wanted to know where he was at the moment.The duo then responded.

"Guess that will have to do." Summer responded disheartedly.

"That's fine." Silver responded. "We'll have to get ready soon..."

Silver chuckled a bit when Mia smacked Eren upside his head. Summer was also excited about their first mission. They finally are tasked with completing a mission without the help of the veterans. She could also see the excitement in Bronco and Consuela as well. The duo then saw Kohaku not wanting to be the leader and then running off.

"Pardon me Captain." Summer said. "But I should go check on her..."

And with that, Summer headed off to go check on Kohaku. She found her outside. Summer then walked up to the worried feline.

"What's wrong?" Summer asked worried.

The Sanjulo siblings couldn't help but to laugh about the conversation Consuela and Bronco were having with each other. He got owned by his older sister! ...wait, that sounds familiar...

It was kind of odd when Kohaku left the group as soon as a decision needed to be made as of who will be the leader for their first real mission. Suggesting that Summer, Consuela or Mia would be the better choices was sort of an "excuse" for Eren; in his eyes everyone needs to show their quality as leader, and she will be no exception. He didn't care about her "whiny" personality; she should quit the idea of being a knight entirely and should find something else she's good at if she can't overcome her fear of messing something up. Nonetheless it was just his thought, something he better kept to himself rather than speaking it out loud.

After Summer left to check for Kohaku Mia was looking at Silver, Erin, Consuela and Bronco. She crossed her arms and was silent for a while, like she was deep within her thoughts of who should take the leadership for this mission.

"Well..." She slowly started "I think it would be fair if everyone gets at least a chance to show their possible qualities as a leader. We may be just cadets, but if we want to show our Mentors and the Captain what we kept in our heads from our training lessons we all should take the opportunities as long as we have them. It could cost us some reputation if we back off of it."

Eren wasn't sure what to think about his sister’s speech, but he needed to admit that she had a valid point.

"I'd suggest that Silver should be the first one who can show how good he is as leader and fighter." He said with a dirty grin in his face "Unless you're too afraid to pull it off, Bluetail!"

Consuela wasn't aware that someone could pay attention to her little question that much. Before she realised it, it kinda escalated. She was proud about the fact she brought up an important point. Like the others, she wasn't sure who should be their leader. Summer and Silver didn't gave that question any attention. Gadget already said something about being a leader, although it was more about she wanted not to be the one in charge. The first reaction and it was like that. Consuela couldn't help herself, but shook her head. It was really demotivating seeing that the first idea of someone was to run away. They were even still in the castle and one of them already had problems handling the mission. At least before running out, Gadget suggested on of the other girls should be the leader. Consuela was pondering about the idea. She didn't ever thought about being the leader one day and actually she would rather suggest Mia and not herself, not because Mia is something like a sister for Consuela but because her father was the leader of the rocket knight. Still the position of being the leader was quite tempting and had a nice ring to it. Consuela had experience or at least some kind. She was the second oldest and together with her big brother, she was something like a leader for her younger siblings that should count, right? Well Mia did suggest that everyone would get their turn, so Consuela would get the chance. Should she really try it?

Bronco didn't realised that his sister was deep in thoughts, he had other things in mind. Gadget already wanted to throw the towel, but that didn't bothered the young armadillo. If he had to, he would fight for two or three. Even for more if he had to. The others were talking about a leader for the mission, but no one seems to know who would be the best. Bronco didn't understood it. Shouldn't it be Eren or Mia since their father was also the leader? Or wouldn't it be better if the strongest would lead the group? Eren said Silver should prove himself to be a leader and a fighter. "Maybe we will find our leader during our mission!" shouted Bronco full with confidence and crossed his arms. He puffes his chest out, hit it with his fist and declared "A real man has to proof himself and I'm sure if anyone could be a leader, he will proof it somehow," Bronco was sure someone would complain about that, but he didn't care. He knew somehow it should work out and maybe he would be the new leader. He was strong and full of confidence, he only lacked a sense for directions.
Still he was curious if Silver would say yes or no to Eren's little challenge. "Why Silver from all people?" Bronco then asked and looked to Silver. The armadillo wasn't sure what was so special about the wolf. Bronco shook his head "Why don't you try it Eren? Your father is the commander after all!"

Gadget had a lot to think about while she waited for the others. First of all, Would she or could she be expected to be an effective leader in only her first real mission? What if she screws it up and someone gets hurt? Gadget simply couldn't bare the thought of being any cause of casualties.. The other things was she wasn't sure how useful she was going to be during the mission in any way at all, leader or otherwise. Gadget had yet to fully realize her potential.

Summer eventually came outside where Gadget was waiting for the others. Gadget didn't notice she had approached her until after hearing Summer speak to her. Her ears perks up a little bit and she looked up at Summer.

"Oh hey Summer." Gadget replied. "I'm just a little nervous about the mission... I'm not sure if I'm ready for this... But I know I have to try!"

Gadget knew she couldn't hide the fact that she was nervous, and there was no reason for her to continue. Her mentors and peers would be counting on her, and she owed it to them to give it her best.

"You know what.. I'm going to give it my all...! That's the least I can do right?" Gadget said standing up, trying to hype herself up. "As long as I can hold my sword and throw my fists and fight, I will do everything I can to prove myself to the others. Though... Leadership might be a stretch for me right now.." Gadget scratched the back of her head and pondered. "Well.. I guess we just wait for the others. I'm as ready to go as I'll ever be."

When Silver heard Eren suggesting that he should be leader, he was shocked Silver was unsure that he would be fit to be leader. He was cocky and inexperienced. He then listened to everyone else's reaction. Also he believes that leader is someone who is willing to take on the task. He then looked at Eren annoyed and responded.

"You're right Bronco. Why don't YOU be leader Eren?" Silver said mockingly. "Oh, and for a fact I'm not afraid of that because I KNOW it's not the position for me."

Summer was glad too see that Gadget was up to the task of being a knight. Summer always dreamed that she ccould be just as great as the veteran knights. She smiled and went back to the meeting hall. There she saw several of the knights joking and bickering over who should take position as team leader for the mission. "Here we go again..." Summer thought to herself. She then looked to Sparkster.

"What are they on about now?" She muttered to herself.

Like Consuela Mia feared that nearly everyone backed off from being a possible leader for their first mission. It was all up to Eren, Consuela, Bronco and herself it seems. Great start... and the best way to shake off this high amount of responsibility was by simply stating that she and her younger brother are the children of the Captain.

"Just because we're the successors of Captain Sparkster doesn't necessarily need to mean that we're cut-out to be great leaders like he is." Mia slowly started while her heard turned from left to right; looking at Consuela, Bronco, Eren, Summer and lastly Silver "That's a bit over the top, don't you think? Besides, it IS our first real mission, and now that we HAVE the opportunity to show what we have learned so far, why wasting it by backing off from this sort of position? Is no one else willing to prove their qualities as strong fighters, supporters AND leaders? What if the current leader is injured and we need a replacement? Anyone thought about that at all?"

Eren just shrug with both of his shoulders. He wasn't impressed that Silver was, in fact, declining the idea of being the leader for this mission. A loud mouth with no backbone, that's what he was; nothing more, nothing less.

"Fine, if you want to run away from the chance to show how GOOD you are, then I'll take the role as the leader. I'm even fine with a second-in-command leader if I should get injured." The young opossum gave from himself, but he couldn't resist but to look at Silver with a dirty smirk in his face "You wouldn't be able to pull it off anyway, Bluetail. Leave the big fish to the pros."

Mia watched her brother closely as he proceeded to leave the castle, but instead of saying anything about the provoking act against Silver she stood silent. To her it was some sort of "Alpha Male" fight between them, and she was actually glad that Bronco wasn't anything like them.

With a loud sigh she looked to Consuela, Bronco, Silver and Summer, slightly nodding with her head so they were following Eren where they met up with Gadget.

"Is everyone ready to go?" Eren asked with a lot of confidence in his voice, but it was crushed when his sister was coughing a bit while she was crossing her arms "As leader you should make sure to know the strengths and weaknesses of your group so we can all work hand-in-hand without getting in each other’s way, don't you think so, Smart-Ass?"

"Yes, dear sister, I KNOW..." He faked a smile. Nonetheless everyone could tell that the level of annoyance was already high enough to make him lose his temper, and he wasn't very good at making spontaneous strategies that could be considered as effective for all practical purposes, let alone at the battlefield. How was he supposed to know how to build up a tactical usage of a group? He knew the basics but was far away from straight out telling what skills could be used to make a save outcome for everyone. But it didn't mean that he wouldn't try to come up with something, and for now it was way too early to think about such a thing like that, anyway.

"Before we're heading out I want to let you guys know that Consuela will be second-in-command. Not only is she strong enough to protect us and herself, she's also reliable and smart enough to lead us out of trouble. Strength alone shouldn't be the entire focus of our mission; we also need to be able to rely on our allies and - most importantly - stay calm no matter how critical our situation may look like." Eren looked from one person to the next, hoping that he made himself clear enough.
