I... actually never thought about it that way. It's indeed interesting that Axel's actually more of a plot point than the actual enemies/bosses/final bosses. Everytime you think you got rid of him he'll return with a even bigger/improved weapon arsenal to make your life as miserable as possible. But you know what they say: "What does not kill you only makes you stronger." and the Black Knight leader really proves this point.
This actually kind of... proves (?) that it's more about Axel and Sparkster rather than the actual 'war' that is going on in each game.
In earlier days I called Axel a "cheater" because he had so many possible ways to kick your ass, thinking about the entire situation now though he's the one who's improving far more than the actual hero does. Hmm... Sparkster, you might need to get your ass up a little bit more and find new techniques to be on the same level as your big bro... being all sweet, merciful and ready for kicking asses won't cover you for eternity.
